Transponder key replacement

A key that opens the door but won't start the engine is almost always a transponder issue. Here's how we fix it.

What is a transponder key

A transponder is a small chip hidden in the key head. When you turn the key, the antenna around the ignition cylinder queries the chip, which answers with a code. If the immobilizer recognizes the code, the engine can start; otherwise it cuts fuel or ignition.

In Canada, new vehicles have required an immobilizer since 2007, and many older models already had one. A simple blade copy from a hardware store will open the door but won't start the engine.

Signs of a transponder problem

The engine cranks for a second then stops, a key or car-shaped light flashes on the dashboard, or nothing happens despite a healthy battery. These signs often mean the chip is no longer recognized.

Causes vary: a chip damaged by a fall, a key through the washing machine, an unprogrammed copy, or an immobilizer module that lost its memory after electrical work. We test the key with a reader to see if the chip still responds.

How we make the key

We first cut the blade, from your existing key, the vehicle's code or by reading the lock. Then we plug our programmer into the diagnostic port and register the new chip in the vehicle's system.

On several models, we can also erase a lost key from memory. And if you only had one key, we strongly recommend making a second while we're there.

When an automaker reserves the key code or immobilizer procedure for vetted professionals, we go through the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) registry, where Serrurier Momo is registered. Access is secure and tied to our business, which also protects owners against vehicle theft.

Locksmith or dealer?

The dealer can do the job, but often asks you to bring the vehicle in and wait for an ordered key. If all keys are lost, that often means a tow.

We come to you with blank keys and programming equipment. The price is given by phone based on your make and year, before we leave.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hardware store copy start my car?

Usually not: it opens the door, but the chip isn't programmed for the immobilizer.

Can you make a transponder key without the original?

Yes, in most cases.

My key went through the wash, is it dead?

Not necessarily. We test the chip and remote before concluding.

How long does programming take?

Often under an hour on site, depending on the model.
