Unlocking a car door: Slim Jim, air wedge and common sense

The Slim Jim is famous, but on a modern car it's rarely the right tool. Here's how we actually open a door without breaking anything.

The Slim Jim: a tool from another era

A Slim Jim is a flat metal blade slid between the window and the seal to hook the rod linking the handle to the lock mechanism. It worked well on 1980s and 1990s cars, where those rods were simple and reachable.

In recent vehicles, the door holds side airbags, electrical wiring and shielded mechanisms. Sliding a blade in blindly can unplug a wire, damage the power lock or, worse, harm a safety component.

How we open a car today

The safest method for most vehicles: an air wedge gently inflated at the top of the frame to create a few millimetres of space, then a long, thin reach tool that presses the unlock button or pulls the inside handle.

For some models we use pick tools designed for that make's door lock. They open through the cylinder without touching the inside of the door, and sometimes even decode the key so we can cut a new one.

Why not do it yourself

A coat hanger, a screwdriver or a metal ruler may seem like a good idea, but the repairs that follow often cost more than calling a locksmith: a torn seal that lets water in, scratched paint, a forced window motor or an unhooked lock rod.

There's also the theft question: trying to open a car with improvised tools in a parking lot draws attention, and rightly so. A locksmith licensed by the Bureau de la sécurité privée verifies ownership before opening.

What we ask you by phone

The make, model and year, the exact parking spot and where the keys are (seat, trunk, ignition). These details let us arrive with the right tool and give you a firm price.

If the engine is running with the keys inside, tell us: we prioritize those calls because of fuel and theft risk. And if a person or animal is trapped inside in the heat, call 911 first.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Slim Jim damage my car?

On a modern vehicle, yes: it can damage wiring, the power lock or safety components in the door.

Does the air wedge leave marks?

Used correctly, no. We inflate it gently and protect the paint.

How long does it take?

Usually a few minutes once we're there.

Can you open the trunk if the keys are inside?

Yes, we open the door then use the trunk release, or work the trunk lock directly.
