GM ignition problems

Key stuck, forcing or spinning freely: we diagnose and repair your GM ignition wherever it's parked.

Typical GM symptoms

For GM ignitions, diagnosis matters most: a lit security light can come from the key, the cylinder or the module. We test each part before proposing a repair.

Before calling, try gently turning the steering wheel left and right while turning the key: a locked wheel often jams the cylinder. If nothing moves, don't force it, or you may snap the key.

What causes the jam — GM

On many GM vehicles, communication between the ignition cylinder and the immobilizer module is the weak point when the vehicle won't start.

Dirt, cold and a heavy keyring speed up wear. Every day, the weight of the keys pulls on the cylinder and wears its internal parts a little more.

Repair rather than replace — GM

When possible, we replace only the worn wafers and cut a matching new key. If the cylinder is too damaged, we replace it and hand you keys that also open the doors.

For immobilizer vehicles, we make sure the key chip is recognized after the repair. The goal: reliable starting, not a temporary fix.

If the cylinder is replaced and the key must be reprogrammed, our NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) credential gives us secure access to the automaker's immobilizer information for your GM, when it makes it available.

Why an automotive locksmith — GM

A garage often has to order the part and keep your GM for several days. We come with common parts and fix most ignitions on site.

The price is confirmed by phone after a few questions about your model and symptoms, before we leave.

Frequently asked questions

My GM key won't turn, is it the starter?

Rarely. If the key doesn't turn at all, it's almost always the cylinder or the key. If it turns but nothing happens, it's more likely electrical.

Can you repair the ignition without replacing the whole cylinder?

Often yes, by replacing worn parts and cutting a new key.

Will the doors use the same key?

Yes, we make sure your new key also opens the doors.

Does my GM need to be towed?

No, we come to you in most cases.
